Newport is a city located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County. The city itself is located about thirty miles south of Providence. It is likely most well known for being one of New England’s premiere resort towns. The famed Newport Mansions – fourteen historic properties that are considered architectural gems – are located in this town. In addition to being a town with a resort-like air and beautiful historical architecture, Newport is also the home of the Naval War College, and serves as a major training center for the United States Navy. Newport’s history is long and dignified – it was biggest in the 18th century when it was widely used as a port town, and has the highest number of surviving colonial buildings as compared to anywhere else in the United States.
