Vermont presents a group of oddities when it comes to being compared 
with the rest of New England: it’s the only state to be landlocked and 
existed as an independent country for fourteen years before joining the 
United States. While the Vermont Republic may be no more, this state 
still packs a very independent spirit and a feel that’s unique to the 
rest of the region. Vermont is also the nation's leading maple syrup
