Places to visit in Finland

Helsinki is a modern European cultural city with a population of over half a million, whose urban cosmopolitan lifestyle exists in perfect harmony with nature. Surrounded by the sea and its own exotic archipelago, Helsinki offers visitors an endless number of possibilities.

Rovaniemi lies in the vicinity of Arctic Circle; thereby between hills of Korkalovaara and Ounasvaara, at confluence of ‘Kemijoki River’ and ‘Ounasjoki River’, i.e. its tributary. On the 1st of January, 2006, this city and ‘Rovaniemen maalaiskunta’ got consolidated in to one.

Oulu, with a population of 130,000, is the largest and one of the fastest growing cities in Northern Finland. Its location at the mouth of the Oulu River made it accessible for both trade and invasion. The summer in Oulu is warm and bright with very long days. In the middle of summer, at times, there is light throughout the night. The average temperature is 20°C.  But, the Arctic winds blowing in from the sea can make the weather very chilly. In winter, temperatures drop to as low as –15°C.

Espoo is situated in the Helsinki region in southern Finland. It has come a long way from a miniscule rural town in the early twentieth century to a bustling city of approximately 230,000 inhabitants. Summer is the best time to visit. July is the warmest month with the average temperature being 19°C. Winter is severe and long. The coldest month is March when temperatures drop five degrees below freezing point.

Vaasa, in western Finland, is largely a coastal town. This town of approximately 58,000 inhabitants is referred to as the sunniest spot in the country. Though Vaasa lies along the coast, it is one of the driest regions of Finland. Summer is the best time to visit with temperatures averaging above 20°C. Winter is very cold and temperatures drop to below freezing point for most of the season.

Savonlinna can be described as a town as well as municipality located in south-eastern part of Finland, at the center of ‘Saimaa Lake Region’.
