Split, Croatia’s
second-largest city, is Mid-Dalmatia’s most important settlement. The
cultural and tourist centre of the region, its port is also Croatia’s
busiest, second only to Rijeka. Its location, climate and unique
cultural heritage, hold a strong attraction for tourists. Split’s
most important monument is Diocletian’s Palace, which is on the UNESCO
World Heritage List. The walls of the Palace embrace Split’s historic
centre. Also outstanding amongst Split’s attractions is the 13th century cathedral; from its six-storey bell-tower one can enjoy a superb panorama.
